Cal Recycle Grow Site Clean Up
With help from the Chukchansi Tribe the CRCD has been working to clean up the mess that large scale marijuana growers are leaving in our forest. A variety of cartel/large scale growers are and have been functioning in our National Forests for years if not decades. Growing concern for the environmental damage they leave behind has lead to growing efforts to clean up the sites following the drug bust itself. Miles of irrigation line, camp sites, trash pits, water resevoirs and a variety of chemicals used to grow and protect the plants are left behind.
Hundreds of these sites litter our forests. So we have embarked on an effort to clean up every known site. When irrigation piping is left behind sites are much easier to reoccupy year to year. When trash pits are left, animals will rummage thru them forever scattering the trash further. When chemicals are left behind they poison our wildlife and streams for years to come. We have completed our second grant round with Cal Recycle to clean up illegal dump sites in the Sierra National Forest. We have cleaned up over 10 sites, from Mammoth Pool to Bass Lake. Tires, tons of trash, couches and even cars have been picked up with the help of Keith Horton and his crew with All Right Recycling.
There is an ongoing problem where people dump their household trash on the side of the road in the forest, instead of disposing of it properly at the dump. We have trouble understanding this mind set that has no respect for the land. We are currently exploring the use of cameras to identify those that feel that dumping their trash on others land is a solution.
